A few years ago my son was about to turn 18 and I asked my husband for some light up letters to display at his party.
He searched on line but the majority of companies hiring light up letters only had the words ‘LOVE’ and ‘MR & MRS’ – the ones that did have the letters and numbers we wanted were really expensive. So, I asked him to make some.
Chris has been a builder/joiner since completing his apprenticeship after school and his skills for making things are completely off the scale. He made me a rocking horse for my 30th birthday and it’s beautiful!
So, Seth had his name and age in lights for his birthday and they looked amazing. Chris enjoys making things - taking a flat piece of wood and transforming it into something completely different is something he’s really good at so when a friend asked if we had ‘30’ in light up numbers – we said ok and it went from there!
Creating them wasn’t without problems though – we nearly divorced (twice) and fitted the wrong bulbs into the letters (regular 40w bulbs and you could see them from space!). From that experience, we found a company that supplied fairground lights to clients all over the world and we learned a lot.
That started our new business together and in the last few years, not only do we now have the alphabet (most of it twice and in some cases, 3 of certain letters), all the numbers (most of them twice too) – not to mention our beautiful 8ft love heart light up arch. We have expanded our range of décor to include venue dressing (tablecloths, chair covers and sashes, etc), backdrops (fairy light backdrops, flower and foliage walls and sequin wall), centrepieces (fishbowls, cylinder vases, blossom trees, martini glasses, flower arrangements and candelabras) as well as yummy goodies – sweet cart, chocolate fountain, candy floss, doughnut and cupcake walls.
Running a business can be challenging but we took advice, signed up to training courses, applied our own experiences and expertise and even set up this website! We continue to train, consult with our peers and learn something every day.
